A leader of the church must
be qualified as a leader biblically, because the church reputation and Christ
is placed on the shoulder of the leaders. Who are church leaders? They are all
who have responsibility in the church such as pastors, elders, deacons, administrators,
youth leader, etc. When a church elect leaders, it should be done a Paul wrote
to Timothy. A leader of the church must be blameless, the husband of one wife,
vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not
given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a
brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children
in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own
house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being
lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he
must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach
and the snare of the devil. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not double
tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; Holding the
mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved;
then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. There many advantages
if the election of church leader conducted honestly.
A church leader should have
honesty in all their life, because their responsibility is coming from God and
will give to God. What they are saying should the truth. By doing so they will
have a clear conscience, trust and credibility from the church member. A leadership
without honesty result a lack of trust and without trust, there are no followers.
Without followers, one cannot be a leader. All the theories and guidelines of
leadership will fail without honesty and integrity. Therefore honesty is the most
crucial and essential characteristic for leaders.
